Desexing – leads to Cranial cruciate disease

Desexing

We have just completed an 11-year longitudinal study on the relationship between desexing and cranial cruciate ligament disease (CCr).

Key insights:

  • In 2021, research showed that Luteinising Hormone Receptor (LHR) is upregulated in CCr and seen in cancers such as osteosarcoma, mast cell, and hemangiosarcoma.
  • This challenged the safety of routine desexing. For three years, we trialed a new approach – combining Desexing, HPG music therapy, and post-operative acupuncture.
  • Result: a 92% reduction in CCr disease risk ratio. Here is a graphical representation of the results of our study:

We can now confidently offer desexing again, provided these principles are followed:

  • Age – ideally 15 months for large breeds, 6 months is acceptable for small breeds.
  • Support – use of HPG music therapy + acupuncture in the 3-week post-operative period.
  • Diet – avoid dry food.
